Add another suburban Connecticut office complex to the list of ones potentially facing trouble as employers reconsider their space needs in an era of increased remote work among office tenants.

The Hartford insurance company plans to shift “fewer than 500” employees from its $146 million Windsor complex to its downtown Hartford headquarters, the Hartford Courant reported last week.

The company could ultimately sell the 457,396-square-foot property at the intersection of Day Hill Road and Blue Hills Avenue Extension, the paper reported. The 73-acre parcel is assessed at $44.3 million and appraised at $63.29 million, according to town property records. The Hartford currently subleases a portion of the property to other office tenants.

This wouldn’t be the first time the insurance giant has abandoned a piece of its suburban footprint, having sold off its Simsbury campus in 2015.

Office owners statewide are having trouble bringing their buildings to full occupancy in many parts of the state, with some transitioning to mixed-use strategies and others, particularly in Stamford, investigating multifamily conversions or redevelopment.
