The new owner of a 158,000-square-foot shopping center in Meriden has announced plans for a $5.2 million renovation project including two large self-storage facilities replacing vacant supermarket and discount store space.

The work is set to begin in July at the 11-acre Centennial Plaza property, owner DealPoint Merrill of Woodland Hills, California announced today.

In January, the Meriden zoning board of appeals approved a variance for the self-storage facility, which would replace the former Stop & Shop Supermarket and Railroad Salvage buildings.

An attorney for DealPoint Merrill told board members that grocery chains including Shop Rite, Big Y, Aldi and Trader Joe’s all declined interest in occupying the property, according to a report in the Record Journal newspaper.
