Connecticut municipalities permitted 25 percent fewer housing units through the end of February this year than they had by the end of February 2020, according to new data released by the state Department of Economic and Community Development.
So far, only 445 homes have been green-lit, compared to 594 at the end of February 2020 and 498 at the end of February 2019.
Only 306 single-family homes and 135 units in multifamily buildings with at least five units have received permits so far this year, compared to 260 and 297 respectively through Feb. 29, 2020.
The drop-off in multifamily permitting comes on the heels of two successive years of strong multifamily activity – 3,029 multifamily units were permitted in all of 2019 and 2,644 in 2020 – and a 2020 home purchase market dominated by demand for single-family homes in many suburban communities.
