A local developer plans to raze two buildings in downtown New Britain and erect a large mixed-use project in their place.

Avner Krohn, head of Jasko Development, recently won Common Council approval for a tax deferral deal with the city on the property that would be key to letting the project go forward.

According to the Common Council resolution, Krohn plans to build an 82,500-square-foot project with 6,000 square feet of ground-floor retail and 90 apartment units. The parcels at 267 and 277 Main St. – one of which once housed a bank branch and the other formerly housing a store – have been empty for 20 years and are “in need of significant rehabilitation.”

Jasko has made revitalizing downtown New Britain a core focus, starting with smaller-scale rehabilitations of dilapidated older buildings. Part of the draw has been the nearby CTfastrak bus rapid transit station, which has successfully spurred other multifamily developments nearby.
