A large estate on the Stamford-New York State line is back on the market after a price cut.

The 261-acre Hillandale Estate is being offered for $49.5 million. Douglas Elliman global marketing consultant Lisa Simonsen has the listing.

The property at 1233 Rock Rimmon Road was last on the market for $75 million in 2015, but was taken off the market after owner and Liberty Travel co-founder Gilbert Haroche died at age 87. Haroche had previously listed the estate in 2007 for $95 million.

Before the coronavirus pandemic, homes in backcountry Greenwich, plus those in Stamford and other Gold Coast towns that were far away from train stations and activity centers, were selling slowly and at discounts, local agents said at the time. With many well-heeled New Yorkers looking to move out of the city, whether permanently or until a COVID-19 vaccine is found, there is hope that properties with more elbow room could see more demand.

According to the listing, the main house has over 17,000 square feet of living space plus an Olympic-sized pool, four guest homes, two horse barns and multiple private lakes.

The 10-bedroom house was built in 1900 for the Sulzberger family, publishers of the New York Times, it still retains many period details like hand-stained glass and imported marble.
