Connecticut’s economy may not be in the best shape, but one thing the Nutmeg State can boast about is being home to lots of corporate giants.
The state has more Fortune 1000 companies on a per capita basis than any other state in the country, according to a recent study by U.S. News & World Report.
Fortune 500 companies headquartered in Connecticut include health insurance firms Aetna and Cigna and United Technologies, the parent company of both heating and air-conditioning manufacturer Carrier and Otis Elevator.
The emergence of digital media has also had a huge impact on Connecticut’s economy, with more than 1,200 digital media-related businesses located in the state, including sports media giant ESPN. Other top industries include advanced manufacturing, bioscience, green technology, insurance and financial services.
Other states that fell into the top five for most fortune 1,000 companies were Rhode Island, Illinois, Ohio and New York.
The rankings were part of a larger study by U.S. News World & Report that ranked the top states in general. Overall, Connecticut was ranked the 21st best state, which is three spots higher than it ranked last year.
