Police are warning small businesses to be wary of scams by people claiming to be from a utility company.

The Westport Police Department said local businesses have been getting calls from people asking for overdue payments and threatening to shut off power if payment is not made.

Police say business owners and managers have been asked to buy a prepaid money card and then provide the scratch-off numbers to the caller, or to wire money to pay an overdue bill.

The department advises anyone receiving such a call to hang up and call the utility company to check on the balance.
